Born in Surakarta, Central Java, Basoeki studied painting at the Koninlijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag, the Netherlands. He furthered his knowledge of the arts in Paris and Rome. Basoeki returned to Indonesia in 1942 and became a member of Poetera (People's Power Center). He later lived in Bangkok, Thailand, and served as the palace painter
